you know you’ve been alone too long…when you start swaying to the Colombian music…definite tango music…sitting alone on your side of the restaurant, sipping a soft drink and downing chile verde con pollo, rice and beans…the night so cold- muy frio/ ta se fuar- you need something warm- red chiles, green chiles, any chiles…waxing away, poetically-longing for a partner for the piped-in dance.
but here, in a corner…of a corner…of a corner…you listen and long alone. solomente mi…table for one…with a view of the kitchen, where the door swings open and a chicquita hips her way through the dining room with barely a glance at any table, overworked, underpriviledged, and foreign…as foreign as a female beside you- across from you- or, dancing with you…
and then, the music stops. and you look up. the Mexican channel is silent, all lips moving, no sound. your waiter pauses, you take another tortilla, scooping the mixture into the waiting blanket, like an edible fancy napkin presentation. solomente mi…no mas..fork to plate, knife to table, spoon to bowl…no more, no more wonder…and you take your leave…bia blasta…con mucho gusto…thank you very much…
…out into the freeze…out to a vehicle as cold as an ex-wife’s old phone number…
and drive home…solomente mi….
a sad dance indeed.
I hope your days, weeks and months get better. 🙂 It’s very cold outside!
Thank you!
I like this kind of “salsa” music, especially do some moving to the music on my own. I hope it doesn’t just make you sad, but lifts you up! Even when “only you.” Take care, my friend! Robin
